Orange Islands

The Orange Archipelago or Orange Islands is a region that is located south from Kanto and is known for the tropical climate and the chain of islands its consisted. Ash decided to challenge the Orange League, which consists of five gym leaders.

Featured Characters

Tracey: He’s the only new major character on this adventure. When he first saw Ash’s Pikachu, Tracey was very impressed by its condition. Later, Ash and Misty helped him to take care of an injured Lapras and when Tracey learned that they knew Professor Oak, he joined them to travel together!

Professor Ivy: She is a Professor who lives in Valencia Island. She is the person who gave the GS Ball to Ash. Brock decided to stay with her while Ash is travelling.

Gym Leaders: The Orange Islands have Gym Leaders too, but the difference is that only five Gym Leaders exist here. They are Cissy, Danny, Rudy, Luana and last but not least, Drake! They also are not done in typical fashion. Instead, the Orange Island gyms, they were different challenges such as a sled race or match where Ash had to shoot down several targets in a race on the water.

Episode 113, Viva Las Lapras: Lapras reunited with its family on this episode and Ash decided it’s better for it to stay with them.

Important moments

Ash decided to take Charizard with him in the Orange Islands, but it still didn’t obey Ash. In episode 105, “Charizard Chills”, it was battling with a Poliwrath, and lost, without even obeying Ash. It was first hit with a Water Gun that almost doused the flame on its tail and an Ice Beam. Ash decided to help it by putting a blanket on it to help Charizard regain its body heat. Ash succeeded, and finally Charizard trusted him. As a result, they won against Poliwrath in a rematch!

Best battles

Ash vs Luna, Episode 108, Double Trouble: This was a double battle between Ash’s Charizard and Pikachu, and Luna’s Alakazam and Marowak. First, Charizard and Pikachu were having trouble collaborating and Alakazam was attacking Charizard with Psychic many times. Pikachu wouldn’t help Charizard at first but a few more attacks, it decided to help Charizard by using a Thunderbolt to Alakazam. Pikachu jumped on Charizard’s back, and dodged successfully a Boomerang from Marowak. Alakazam was ready to use Hyper Beam on Charizard but the Boomerang came back and hit Alakazam, and not only that, the Hyper Beam missed and attacked Marowak by accident. As a result, both Pokémon were unable to battle and Ash won!

Ash vs Drake, Episode 111, Hello, Pummelo!: It was time for Ash to battle the current champion of the Orange Islands, Drake. Drake chose his first Pokémon, a Ditto, while Ash chose Pikachu. It was a close battle but Pikachu managed to win. Drake’s second Pokémon was Onix, and Ash’s was Squirtle. Onix seemed pretty strong when it used Bind but Squirtle finished it with a Hydro Pump and a Skull Bash. Drake is was down to two Pokémon, so he chose Gengar. Ash’s choice was Tauros, however Gengar attacked with Confuse Ray and Ash called Tauros immediately.

Now it was time for Lapras to battle. Gengar used Night Shade and Lapras Ice Beam, and both Pokémon were knocked out. Now Ash chose Tauros once more and Drake chose Venusaur. Venusaur used Solar Beam but Tauros endured it and Tauros won this with two Take Down attacks. Next, Drake’s Electabuzz won Bulbasaur with a Thunder Punch. Ash chose Charizard and won with a Seismic Toss. Drake chose Dragonite, his only Pokémon left. It started a sweep and won easily against Charizard, Tauros and Squirtle. Pikachu finished it with a Thunder while it was on top of Dragonite and Ash became the Champion of the Orange Islands!
