Shiny Hunting in the Crown Tundra

Find out how to reset for Legendary Pokémon in the Crown Tundra, and which are Shiny-locked.

Update 24th October: Shiny Rates have been discovered for Dynamax Adventure (1/100 for each Pokémon with the Shiny Charm).

The Crown Tundra part of the Expansion Pass of Pokémon Sword and Shield brings with it a slew of Legendary Pokémon to try to catch. We cover which of these can be Shiny, and in what circumstances you can encounter one.

Shiny-locked Pokémon

The following Pokémon are Shiny-lockedthey can not be caught or obtained in their Shiny Forms within the Crown Tundra.

  • Galarian Articuno
  • Galarian Zapdos
  • Galarian Moltres
  • Victini (Unknown)
  • Keldeo (bring Cobalion, Terrakion, and Virizon to Ballimere Lake and make Curry)
  • Cosmog (Gift)
  • Poipole (Gift)
  • Glastrier
  • Spectrier
  • Calyrex

This means that of the Legendary Pokémon outside of Dynamax Adventures, Cobalion, Terrakion, Virizon, Regice, Registeel, Regirock, Regigigas, Regieleki, and Regidrago can be Shiny. Be ready to soft-reset!

Shiny Legendaries in Dynamax Adventures

All Pokémon includng Legendaries can be Shiny in Dynamax Adventures. These have a higher Shiny rate as well:

  • Odds for every Pokémon to be Shiny is 1/300 without the Shiny Charm, and 1/100 with the Shiny Charm. Shiny odds are calculated when the Dynamax Adventure ends, just before the selection screen.
  • This means if you catch all four Pokémon in a Dynamax adventure, you have roughly a 4/100 = 1/25 chance for a Shiny.
  • All Shiny Pokémon are Star Shinies.

However, soft-resetting is not feasible – you have to do the full Dynamax Adventure to find out if a Pokémon is Shiny or not.

Firstly, you have to battle your way to the Legendary boss (four battles including it) and defeat it. After catching it (all Dynamax Adventure bosses have a 100% catch rate in this mode), only on the catch summary screen will you see if it is a Shiny or not.

You can only take one caught Pokémon out of the Dynamax Adventure, so if you do not take the Legendary then it will respawn. Players are limited to catching and taking one of each Legendary per game. As you need to go through the Dynamax Adventure again for your next chance, this may be a timely process.

If a Shiny is found by one player in a group, it will not necessarily be Shiny for everyone else.
