With Pokémon Gold and Silver coming to Virtual Console worldwide soon, we’ve compiled a list of all the Technical Machines (TMs), and Hidden Machines (HMs) that you can find and use in-game. Check out the list below to find the TMs and HMs you’re looking for.

TM Locations

There are 50 TMs throughout Pokémon Gold and Silver. Each one of them are single use, so think carefully before deciding what TM to teach your pokémon!

TM02 Headbutt Normal 70 100 30% chance to flinch the target Pokémon. You can also use it on special trees outside battle to sometimes encounter certain wild target Pokémon. Ilex Forest, past Celebi’s shine. Follow the path and take the right/south route until you see a man. He can teach it to one of your Pokémon. After doing that, you can buy it in the Goldenrod Department Store for 200 PokéDollars.
TM03 Curse ??? The user lowers its Speed, then raises its Attack and Defense. When used by a Ghost-type Pokémon, it sacrifices half of its max HP to sap the target by 1/4 of its max HP per turn. In the Celadon Mansion during night.
TM04 Rollout Rock 30 90 The user rolls to attack the foe. It continues attacking for five turns, raising the power of the move if it doesn’t miss. Route 35. Head down the grassy path past the tree you can use Cut on to eventually reach it.
TM05 Roar Normal The target is scared off and replaced by another Pokémon in its party. In the wild, the battle ends. Route 32. As you head down, you’ll see a tree you can use Cut on to your left. If you use Cut on it and head straight up along the path, you’ll eventually see a man who will hand it to you.
TM06 Toxic Poison 90 The target is scared off and replaced by another Pokémon in its party. In the wild, the battle ends. Defeat Janine in the Fuchsia City Gym.
TM07 Zap Cannon Electric 100 50 Always paralyzes the target if it hits. In the Power Plant near Cerulean City in Kanto, after returning the missing machine part.
TM08 Rock Smash Fighting 20 100 Has a 50% chance to lower the target Pokémon’s defense when made contact. After defeating or capturing the Sudowoodo in Route 36, you can go to the path on the right to see a man who will give you the TM. You can purchase it in the Goldenrod Department Store after doing so.
TM09 Psych Up Normal The user hypnotizes itself to copy any of the target’s current stat modifiers. Use the Time Capsule in Ecruteak City to trade an Abra from a Gen I game.
TM10 Hidden Power Normal 70 100 A unique attack that varies in type and intensity depending on the Pokémon using it. The Lake of Rage. Look for a house north of the lake through a grassy area to receive the TM from someone. After, you can purchase it in the Celadon Pokémart for 3000 PokéDollars.
TM11 Sunny Day Fire The user intensifies the sun for five turns, powering up Fire-type moves. After beating Team Rocket in the Radio Tower, a girl with a red ponytail will give the TM to you inside the building. You can also purchase it in the Celadon Pokémart for 2000 PokéDollars.
TM12 Sweet Scent Normal The user releases a pleasant aroma that distracts the target, lowering the target’s evasion. A lady gives you the TM near the northern exit of Ilex Forest.
TM13 Snore Normal 30 100 The user snores viciously while sleeping. Has a 30% chance to make the target Pokémon flinch. Fails while the user is awake. Cure the sick Miltank in Route 39 by feeding it six berries. Also found in the Blackthorn City Dark Cave entrance.
TM14 Blizzard Ice 120 70 A howling blizzard is summoned to strike the opposing team. It may also freeze them solid. Trade 5500 coins for it in the Goldenrod Game Corner.
TM15 Hyper Beam Normal 150 90 The target is attacked with a powerful beam. The user must rest on the next turn to regain its energy. Trade 7500 coins for it in the Goldenrod Game Corner.
TM16 Icy Wind Psychic 55 95 The user blasts the target with a gust of chilled air. Lowers the target’s speed. Defeat Gym Leader Pryce in the Mahogany City Gym.
TM17 Protect Normal It enables the user to evade all attacks. Its chance of failing rises if it is used in succession. Can be purchased from the Celadon Pokémart for 3000 PokéDollars.
TM18 Rain Dance Water The user summons a heavy rain that falls for five turns, powering up Water-type moves. Found in the lower level of the Slowpoke Well in Azalea Town.
TM19 Giga Drain Grass 60 100 A nutrient-draining attack. The user’s HP is restored by half the damage taken by the target. Defeat Gym Leader Erika in the Celadon City Gym.
TM20 Endure Normal The user creates a protective field that prevents status problems for five turns. Found in the lower level of the Burnt Tower in Ecruteak City.
TM21 Frustration Normal 100 A full-power attack that grows more powerful the less the user likes its Trainer. Can be obtained on the 5th floor of the Goldenrod Department Store on Sundays. Show the lady next to the clerk a Pokémon with low happiness.
TM22 Solar Beam Grass 120 100 A two-turn attack. The user gathers light, then blasts a bundled beam on the second turn. Route 27. Head past the cave where you have to use HM Waterfall to get past, then head along the path until you see a pool of water to the south. You’ll need to use Surf and Whirlpool to reach the TM.
TM23 Iron Tail Steel 100 75 The user attacks by slamming a steel-hard tail to the target. Has a 30% chance to lower the target’s Defense. Defeat Gym Leader Jasmine in the Olivine City Gym.
TM24 Dragonbreath Dragon 60 100 An incredible blast of breath is loosed at the target. Has a 30% to leave the target with paralysis. After defeating Gym Leader Clair in Blackthorn City, complete the trial in the Dragon’s Den. She gives you the TM after doing so.
TM25 Thunder Electric 110 70 A wicked thunderbolt is dropped on the target to inflict damage. It may also leave the target with paralysis. Trade 5500 coins for it in the Goldenrod Game Corner.
TM26 Earthquake Ground 100 100 The user sets off an earthquake that strikes those around it. Found in Victory Road.
TM27 Return Normal 100 A full-power attack that grows more powerful the more the user likes its Trainer. Can be obtained on the 5th floor of the Goldenrod Department Store on Sundays. Show the lady next to the clerk a Pokémon with high happiness.
TM28 Dig Ground 60 100 The user digs a hole for one turn, evading most attacks. The next turn, the user pops up to attack the target. Found in National Park. Go through the only passable part on the fence near a boy, and follow the path to the left until you reach it.
TM29 Psychic Psychic 90 100 The target is hit by a strong telekinetic force. It may also reduce the target’s Sp. Def stat. Head to Mr. Psychic’s house in Saffron City. He gives you the TM inside.
TM30 Shadow Ball Ghost 80 100 The user hurls a shadowy blob at the target. It may also lower the target’s Sp. Def stat. Defeat Gym Leader Morty in the Ecruteak City Gym.
TM31 Mud Slap Ground 20 100 The user hurls mud in the foe’s face to reduce its accuracy. Defeat Gym Leader Falkner in the Violet City Gym.
TM32 Double Team Normal By moving rapidly, the user makes illusory copies of itself to raise its evasiveness. Trade 1500 coins for it in the Goldenrod Game Corner.
TM33 Ice Punch Ice 75 100 The target is punched with an icy fist. Has a 10% chance to freeze the target. Can be purchased from the Goldenrod Department Store for 3000 PokéDollars.
TM34 Swagger Normal A move that infuriates and confuses the opponent, but it increases the target’s Attack. Found in the Olivine City Lighthouse.
TM35 Sleep Talk Normal While asleep, the user randomly uses one of the moves it knows. Found in the Goldenrod Department Store Basement.
TM36 Sludge Bomb Poison 90 100 Unsanitary sludge is hurled at the target. Has a 30% chance to poison the target. Route 43. Speak with the guard inside a passerby building.
TM37 Sandstorm Rock A five-turn sandstorm is summoned to hurt all combatants except the Rock, Ground, and Steel types. Tohjo Falls, in the nearby house outside the exit. Speak to the old lady there to receive it.
TM38 Fire Blast Fire 120 85 The target is attacked with an intense blast of all-consuming fire. Has a 10% to leave the target with a burn. Trade 5500 coins for it in the Goldenrod Game Corner.
TM39 Swift Normal 60 100 The target is attacked by multiple stars. The attack never misses. Found in the lower level of the Union Cave.
TM40 Defense Curl Normal The user curls up in a ball, raising defense. Found in Mt. Mortar’s middle entrance.
TM41 Thunderpunch Electric 75 100 The target is punched with a fist of electricity. Has a 10% chance to paralyze the target. Can be purchased from the Goldenrod Department Store for 3000 PokéDollars.
TM42 Dream Eater Psychic 100 100 An attack that steals 1/2 HP of the damage inflicted on the target while it’s sleeping. Viridian City. There’s a tree you can use Cut on. Talk with the man beyond that to receive it.
TM43 Detect Fighting It enables the user to evade all attacks. Its chance of failing rises if it is used in succession. North of the Lake of Rage.
TM44 Rest Psychic The user goes to sleep for two turns. It fully restores the user’s HP and heals any status problem. Found in the fifth level of the Ice Path Cave.
TM45 Attract Normal 100 If it is the opposite gender of the user, the target becomes infatuated and less likely to attack. Defeat Gym Leader Whitney in the Goldenrod City Gym.
TM46 Thief Dark 40 100 The user attacks and steals the target’s held item simultaneously. It can’t steal if the user holds an item. Inside Team Rocket’s Hideout in Mahogany Town.
TM47 Steel Wing Steel 70 100 The user attacks the target with iron-like wings. Has a 10% chance to raise the user’s Defense. Route 28. Look for the house behind two bushes, and you’ll receive it inside. You can also find it in the Rock Tunnel.
TM48 Fire Punch Fire 75 100 The target is punched with a blazing fist of fire. Has a 10% chance to burn the target. Can be purchased from the Goldenrod Department Store for 3000 PokéDollars.
TM49 Fury Cutter Bug 10 95 The user attacks the target with a sickle or scythe. Each time it manages to hit, the power of the move doubles. If it misses, the power of the move is set back to normal. Defeat Gym Leader Bugsy in the Azalea City Gym.
TM50 Nightmare Ghost 100 A move that makes a sleeping target have bad dreams. The target will lose 1/4 HP every turn as long as it’s asleep. Deliver the mail that a Spearow is holding from the Goldenrod North Gate Guard, to the man on Route 31.

 

HM Locations

There are seven HMs you can find. Unlike TMs, HMs are multi-use, so you can use them over and over again on many different pokémon. These are mostly useful outside of battle; you can move boulders, light up caves, or even cross the sea. Be careful teaching these moves to your Pokémon, as you won’t be able to forget and replace HM moves unlike regular moves. The only way to remove them is with the help of the Move Deleter in Blackthorn City.

HM01 Cut Normal 50 95 Cuts the foe with sharp scythes, claws, etc. Also used for cutting small bushes to open new paths. Ilex Forest. Chase the Farfetch’d and talk to the boy afterwards to receive it.
HM02 Fly Flying 70 95 The user flies high for one turn, then strikes in the next turn. Used to fly to places already visited. Talk to Chuck’s wife (the woman outside Cianwood City Gym) to obtain it from her. You must defeat Chuck inside the Gym first.
HM03 Surf Water 95 100 The user creates a huge wave to crash down on the target. Can also be used for crossing water. Ecruteak City’s Dance Hall. Defeat the five Kimono Girls there, then chat to the man nearby the stage to receive the HM.
HM04 Strength Normal 80 100 The foe is slugged at maximum power. Also used for moving obstacles like boulders. Found and received in the house next to the Pokemon Center in Olivine City.
HM05 Flash Normal 70 Creates a brilliant flash of light that blinds the target, reducing the target’s accuracy. Also used to light up dark caves. Found and received in the house next to the Pokemon Center in Olivine City. Defeat Sage Li in the Sprout Tower in Violet City. After winning, he gives you the HM.
HM06 Whirlpool Water 15 70 Traps the target in a raging whirlpool for 2-5 turns, causing damage equal to 1/16 of its max HP each turn. Help Lance defeat Team Rocket in Mahogany Town. Afterwards, Lance gives you the HM.
HM07 Waterfall Water 80 100 The target is hit with a blow packing the power of fish traveling up waterfalls. Can also be used to climb waterfalls. Inside the Ice Path Cave. Past the first ice puzzle is another optional ice puzzle right next to it. Solve that puzzle to reach the HM.
