Pokémon to drop the accented é from name

The Pokémon franchise will from now on be known as Pokemon in most of the world. God bless the accented é, you served us well.

In a surprise announcement, the world of Pokémon will no longer be known by that name. The accented é in Pokémon is to be dropped. This is to increase the ease of branding the franchise worldwide.

“While we still will have the name pronounced as ‘Pokémon’, it will no longer use the accented e when written,” a spokesperson stated. “As several languages do not typically use this accented letter, filing future trademarks will be more efficient. Thus we will be able to increase profits and engage even more young minds with the updated Pokemon brand.”

“We also intend to reprint recent Pokemon Trading Card sets with this update in mind, which will surely be welcomed by excited players given how much they’re buying and reselling the cards of late.”

From our end, we welcome the change. You’ll appreciate it more when you stop having to remember the key combination for writing accented é’s, or resort to typing ‘Pokemon’ in a search engine to bring up the letter to copy-and-paste into articles. We do wonder if other older products will need to be rebranded.

Note that this won’t apply in Europe – instead accepted spellings will be Pokêmon or Pokęmon.
